| The Me 163 was the fastest aircraft of WW II. Its performance was literally explosive, as its revolutionary engine made it
dangerous and unpredictable. When it worked, it was a sight that few could have imagined at that time, as it streaked toward the sky at astonishing speeds. The Me-163 represents a
landmark in aviation technology, although it was more of a threat to its own pilots than to the enemy due mainly to the highly volatile rocket fuels. The plane carried fuel to run the rocket motor at full power for only four minutes. Once it reached its operational altitude and accelerated to fighting speed, the pilot would turn off the engine and go into attack mode by coasting along at high speed. As the fighter slowed, the pilot would fire the rocket in short bursts to restore speed. This way he could extend his fighting time to about eight minutes with an effecive radius of 25 miles from home base. Because of its high volatility, it was important to exhaust the fuel before gliding in for a landing. |
