The Air Force
will fly the F-35 that is designed for conventional takeoffs and landings.
It closely resembles the F-22 Raptor. In fact, the two aircraft will fly
complimentary missions: the F-22s establish and maintain air superiority
while the F-35s attack the enemy on the ground. Early in the battle, Mach 2
speed and blinding stealth will enable the JSF to deliver a pair of 2,000
lb. super-smart bombs. Later, when the stealth feature is no longer
necessary, ground crews can quickly reconfigure the JSF with a variety of
external missiles on the hardpoints. The Air Force will purchase 1,763
F-35As at about $30 million each. |
