The PBY Catalina was a successful search-and-rescue aircraft, and universally recognized for its ability and reliability. It flew in both European and Far Eastern theaters. In the island battles of the Pacific, they gained fame for the "Black Cats" night search-and-destroy missions from 1942 until the end of the war. Of the 3,000 built, about 100 still fly today.
