| The P-51 Mustang is considered to be the greatest American fighter of its era. Even more amazing is that it took just 102 days
from conception through design and to completion of the prototype. Fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine and a four-bladed propeller, the Mustang was able to fly in excess of 400 mph.
More famous as the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound than his wartime achievements, Chuck Yeager became an ace in Europe flying a P-51. After he was promoted to captain,
he added 1 Me-262 and 4 Fw-190s for a total of 11 career victories. He retired as a Brigadier General. |
