Flying the P-38 Lightning pictured, Major Richard Bong became America's "Ace of Aces" . Sixty days after he broke the record of 26 victories that Rickenbacker held since WW I, he ran his score up to 40. At the end of 1944, Bong was transferred to the States. His new assignment was to test the P-80 that was under development at Lockheed. During a take-off, the plane flamed out, and Bong was killed after a low altitude bailout failed. Among his many decorations was the coveted Medal of Honor.
