Joe Foss was the first to Marine become an ace in a day. A recipient of
the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Flying Cross, Joe is the highest
scoring Marine ace with 26 victories while flying an F-4F Wildcat with
VMF-121.
Following the War, Foss helped organize the South Dakota Air National Guard and retired with the rank of Brigadier General. He went on to become governor of South Dakota, Commissioner of the American Football League, President of the National Rifle Association, and was instrumental in the formation of the American Fighter Aces Association.
